When you register a domain, you don't just pick a name - you pick an extension too. .com, .co.uk, .com.au. They look different, but which one actually matters for your business?

The Rule: Pick Your Market, Not Your Size

The extension of your domain tells people where you do business, not how big you are. A one-person freelancer can use .com and look just as legitimate as a multinational company. A large company can use a regional extension if that's where they operate.

For Google's algorithm, it doesn't matter much. A .co.uk site can rank for global searches. A .com site can rank in the UK. The extension is not a ranking factor.

But for your customers, the extension signals where you're based and who you're trying to reach.

.com - The Default

.com is what most people assume. When someone says "find us online," most people will automatically type "companyname.com" first. It's global, it's expected, and it's professional.

Use .com if:

  • You're selling to anyone, anywhere
  • Your business is online-first and not tied to a location
  • You want the broadest possible appeal
  • The .com is available and you can afford it (it's usually around £10 - £12 a year)

The downside? Everyone wants .com, so finding one that's not taken is harder.

.co.uk - For the UK Market

.co.uk signals "I'm a UK business." It's just as professional as .com, and local customers often trust UK businesses more when they see a UK domain.

Use .co.uk if:

  • You're based in the UK
  • You sell mostly to UK customers
  • You want to signal local credibility
  • Your .com is taken or too expensive

For UK companies, .co.uk is the standard. Customers expect it. Google treats it the same as .com for UK search results.

.com.au - For Australia

Same logic as .co.uk - .com.au is the Australian standard. It signals to customers that you're Australian and it's what they'll expect if you're advertising locally.

Use .com.au if you're based in Australia and selling to the Australian market.

Other Extensions

.org, .net, .biz, and hundreds of newer extensions exist. Unless there's a specific reason (your brand name is only available in .io, or you want a geographic regional domain like .london), stick with the three above. They're the only ones most people trust immediately.

What If Your Name Is Taken?

If companyname.com is taken, you have options:

  1. Buy it from whoever owns it (if they're willing to sell)
  2. Try a different TLD - companyname.co.uk or companyname.com.au
  3. Modify the name slightly - company-name.com or mycompanyname.com

If the .com is sitting unused, you can sometimes contact the owner and make an offer. If it's an active business, they probably won't sell. If it's a squatter, they might.

Before you pay premium prices for a taken domain, make sure the alternative isn't better. companyname.co.uk can be just as effective as companyname.com, and costs a fraction of the buyout price.

The Bottom Line

Pick the extension that matches where you do business. For a UK business, .co.uk is perfect. For Australian, .com.au is perfect. For anything global, .com is the safe choice. Don't overthink it. Pick one, buy it, and move on.

Whatever you choose, buy it now. Every year you wait is another year someone else could register it.
