Starting a Business? Register Your Domain First
You've got an idea. You're ready to start a business. What's the first thing you should do?
Not a website. Not business cards. Not a shop or an office. You should register a domain name. Today. Before you do anything else.
Why a Domain Is Your Foundation
A domain name is the one business asset you can own completely and forever. It's your address on the internet. It's your professional identity. It's what people type to find you.
Everything else comes and goes:
- Your website changes (or disappears if the host shuts down)
- Your email provider might close your account
- Your social media following can vanish if the platform changes
- Your business location can move
- Your phone number can change
Your domain is permanent. You own it. It stays with you for as long as you want it.
The Branding Locked In
Once you register yourname.com or yourbusiness.co.uk, that's your brand. People know to find you there. You can build your entire digital presence around that domain.
If you wait and build something else first, and later decide you want the .com but it's taken, you're rebuilding everything. You're changing your branding, your email address, your online presence.
Do it backwards and it costs you money, time, and momentum.
Cheap Insurance Against Regret
A domain costs £10 - £20 a year. That's £1 - £2 a month. For that cost, you secure:
- Your chosen name before someone else takes it
- A professional email address
- A digital address that's entirely yours
- Protection against someone else owning your name
If you don't register it and you wait six months to launch, someone else might grab it. Now you're either squatting on a second choice or paying 10x the cost to buy it back from whoever grabbed it.
What to Do Right Now
- Think of the name you want your business to be known as
- Check if the .com (or .co.uk, or .com.au) is available
- Register it - today, not next week
- Set up WHOIS privacy to protect your details
- Enable auto-renewal so you never lose it
That's it. You don't need a website yet. You don't need to point it anywhere. You just need to own it.
After You've Registered
Now that you own the domain, you can:
- Set up a professional email on it (you@yourbusiness.com)
- Build a website when you're ready
- Use it for business cards, social media bios, invoices
- Know that no matter what else changes, you have this asset
The domain is your anchor. Everything else hangs off it.
Common Mistakes
Waiting until you're ready to launch. By then, someone else might have registered it. Or the price might be premium. Don't wait.
Registering with the wrong registrar. Pick a reputable one (not the cheapest). You'll be renewing this every year. Don't set yourself up with a registrar that's going to shock you with renewal prices.
Forgetting to renew. Set it to auto-renew immediately. You should never have to think about renewing a domain again. It just happens automatically.
Not enabling WHOIS privacy. Your personal details are now public. Fix that immediately.
Buying a domain that's hard to spell. Test it. Say it out loud. Have someone else spell it back. If they get it wrong, it's not the right domain.
The Real Reason to Do This First
Starting a business is overwhelming. There's a thousand things to do. Most of them are hard and complicated.
Registering a domain is the one thing that's simple and takes five minutes. It's also the one thing that, if you skip it, causes real problems later.
Do the simple thing first. Secure the domain. Once you own it, everything else gets easier because you have a solid foundation to build on.
You can make the website later. You can hire staff later. You can get an office later. But secure your domain now. It's the one decision you won't regret in five years - and that's worth something.
