What Is DNS and Why Should Business Owners Actually Care?
DNS stands for Domain Name System. It's the thing that translates "mywebsite.com" into the actual numbers that make your website work online. You don't need to understand how it works - but you should understand why you need to care about it.
The One-Sentence Version
DNS is like a phone book for the internet. Your domain name is the person's name, and DNS is the system that looks up their phone number.
Why Does This Matter to You?
When someone types your domain name into their browser, their computer doesn't know where your website lives. The internet doesn't work with names - it works with IP addresses, which are long strings of numbers like 192.168.1.1. DNS is what converts your friendly domain name into those numbers so your website can actually load.
This matters because:
Your website won't work without it. If DNS is broken, your site doesn't load, even if the website itself is working perfectly fine. You'll look offline when you're not.
Email might break too. Email forwarding and professional email services rely on DNS records to work. If you set these up wrong, emails won't reach you.
Security can be compromised. If someone else controls your DNS, they can redirect your entire domain somewhere else, steal your email, or trick your customers into visiting a fake website.
What You Actually Need to Do
You don't need to manage DNS yourself. Your hosting provider or your registrar can handle it for you. But you need to know:
Where your DNS is pointing. If you move your website from one host to another, you need to update your DNS records to point to the new host. This is usually a one-time setup that a tech person helps you with.
Who can access it. Your registrar controls who can change your DNS records. Make sure only you (and trusted people) have access to it. If someone else gains access, they can redirect your entire domain.
How to check it's working. If something goes wrong with your website or email, the first thing to check is whether your DNS records are correct. A simple DNS lookup tool can tell you if it's pointing where it should be.
The Real Risk
The biggest risk is if someone gains access to your DNS settings. They could redirect your entire domain to a scam website. Your customers would type your domain and end up somewhere completely different, run by someone else. They could steal your email. They could take the whole thing hostage and demand money.
This sounds dramatic because it is - but it's also rare if you:
- Use a reputable registrar (not some cheap provider with terrible security)
- Use a strong password on your account
- Turn on two-factor authentication if it's available
- Don't share your login details
- Update your contact information so you get notified of changes
How DNS Works (If You're Curious)
When your customer types your domain:
- Their computer asks a DNS resolver (usually their internet provider) "where is mywebsite.com"?
- The resolver checks the DNS servers you've pointed your domain to
- Those DNS servers say "mywebsite.com lives at IP address X.X.X.X"
- The customer's browser connects to that IP address
- The website loads
If your DNS records are wrong or pointing nowhere, step 4 fails and the site doesn't load.
What About That Registration Deadline?
Every domain registration has an expiration date - usually one year from when you register it. You need to renew it before it expires, or you lose the domain. This isn't DNS - it's domain management - but it's equally important.
Your registrar should send you a reminder email. Don't ignore it. Renew automatically if you can, so you never accidentally let it lapse.
You Don't Need to Be an Expert
You don't need to memorise DNS records or understand how nameservers work in detail. You just need to know:
- Your DNS settings are critical to your website and email working
- You should only trust the settings to your registrar or a reputable hosting provider
- If something breaks, DNS might be the culprit
- You can always have a tech person check it for you
Own your domain. Control who can access it. Check that it's pointing where it should be. Do those three things, and DNS won't be a problem.
